Sun
Exposure and Vitamin D: What Dermatologists Tell Their Patients
Conflicting news reports about the best way to get vitamin D can be
confusing. The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) wants you
to know that our message has not changed. Dermatologists continue to
tell their patients to protect their skin from the sun, skip the
indoor tanning, and obtain vitamin D safely through diet. To confirm
this position, the president of the Academy issued this statement in
March:
“Vitamin D is essential for optimal health, and appropriate amounts
of vitamin D can be obtained through a healthy diet which includes
naturally enriched vitamin D foods, fortified foods and beverages
and/or vitamin supplements. Intentional exposure to UV radiation
from the sun (natural) or tanning devices (artificial) is not a safe
or effective way to obtain vitamin D.”
